Aug 19, 2014 Counterspy offers separate trophy lists, one for PS4 and one for PS3/Vita, so players with multiple consoles can achieve 100% twice if desired. The game also supports cross-save, so a game started on one system can be continued on another, and vice versa.
Parents need to know that CounterSpy is a two-dimensional, side-scrolling downloadable action-adventure game that involves strategy and counterintelligence themes. The levels are randomly generated, which gives the game replayability value, and online leaderboards let players see how well they stack up against others. There are four difficulty levels, but harder levels need to be unlocked.
Violence includes use of a variety of weapons (primarily guns) to shoot enemies, who spurt blood before dying. The game looks like a stylized cartoon with themes of the Cold War era. COUNTERSPY explores a time when there was a race for 'the biggest and pointiest missiles,' and the threat of nuclear annihilation was real. Instead of setting the game in the real world, CounterSpy inserts the C.O.U.N.T.E.R. Agency into an alternate world, sabotaging both the Imperialist and Socialist schemes. The game uses mission-based scenarios and randomly generated levels to challenge players, with harder difficulty levels that need to be unlocked. One nameless and faceless agent is the protagonist sent on missions, and he can dispatch enemies using stealth tactics or go in with guns blazing.
The game also incorporates minor platforming elements into the overall mix, which requires some strategy to get at all the hidden elements and the main mission elements. CounterSpy is a stylized side-scroller that looks great; has a nice, bouncy musical theme; and is just plain fun. It's intuitive to play before the challenge ramps up as players progress. Lots of games promise to put you in the shoes of James Bond-like spies, but very few attempt to capture the spirit and flair of the Cold War the way this game does. The angular lines of the nameless spy provide an innate sense of stealth that oozes from the screen during each base infiltration.
You can choose to be stealthy or go in guns blazing, but you still feel like a super-spy in possession of secret weapons and gadgets to help you achieve your mission. The clever hook of searching through bases for documents and secret plans will scratch the covert itch for many players as they try to prevent both the Imperialists and Socialists from achieving their goals. What's even better is the surprising competitive play; based on how well players do on a mission, they receive an overall score for their campaign, which factors into a global leaderboard. At any time, you can attempt to best the score of a particular mission, giving you the opportunity to earn bonus cash and gear.
It's this element that adds a sense of multiplayer competition in a game that's really a single-player experience. Overall, CounterSpy is big on personality with a nice mix of fun thrown in; it doesn't take itself or its time frame seriously but focuses on an entertaining spy experience.
CounterSpy is a 2.5D side-scrolling stealth game available on cross-play for PS4, PS3 and Vita (Also available on mobile devices for iOS and Android). This is the first published title by Dynamighty, a company formed in 2011 by John Elliot & David Nottingham, formerly of LucasArts.Mark Holmes, formerly of Pixar, works as Creative Director. This will be a review of the game on PlayStation 4. Please see the video, where I play the game for the first time and you can listen to my initial thoughts and feelings.
CounterSpy is based on an alternative-earth during the 1960s and uses the cold war as its setting. You play as a spy for COUNTER, a rogue spy agency that keeps checks on the Imperialist States and Socialist Republic from blowing up the world. This time, they are both trying to launch a nuclear attack on the moon, and you must stop it. The tone of the game seems influenced by previous LucasArts games such as the humour of the Monkey Island series, but struggles to pull it off well. The game is entirely single player, with the main aim to sneak into bases and steal the launch plans.

Because this is a 2.5D side-scrolling game there is a limit on the options you can use to sneak past the enemy. This is not a criticism of the game, but to be clear you are not getting a Metal Gear Solid experience. This is more like a puzzles game due to the linearity of the levels with your thinking being “how do solve this part” as opposed to “how do I avoid being detected”.Throughout the levels you can also steal information and blueprints, which will allow you to upgrade the weapons available to the character. The game features an alert system mechanism called DEFCON. This is to keep the player from trying to play the game as a Shoot ‘em Up or being reckless. If you are caught by security cameras or if a guard is able to radio in, the meter will go up. Also it will automatically go up a level if you are killed. If the DEFCON status reaches DEFCON 1, the player will have a limited amount of time to reach the end of the level and shut down the nukes, at which point the game will end.
The game does allow you to reduce this by forcing white-uniformed officers to surrender without killing them, or by using a certain formula. There is not much content in the game for it to warrant a full disc release on PS4, which is why it is only available to download.
The amount of missions and things to do clearly shows that this was made for mobile first and then ported over. The game features procedurally generated levels, meaning that each level will always be different and increases the replayability. The whole game took me about 3 hours to complete.A main criticism of CounterSpy has been problems with the AI, which I also encountered. This is a major problem for a stealth game as the enemies movements and reactions is what you study to try and find weakness and routines.Sometimes I was spotted; sometimes I was not, all the while doing the same type of actions. This is not due to dynamically generated personalities of each enemy, as the game does not have the content level for users to notice this., e.g. This guard won’t see me from this far away because he has got an eye test next week based on his files I read. This is just inconsistency in the AI. The controls for movement around the levels are responsive, whereas using your gun is just a bit sloppy and don’t feel as fluid.
Also, if you have designed a game for the PS4 that contains shooting, L2 and R2 should be used for aiming and shooting, not L1 and R1.This is not 1995 where developers from Japan and Europe argued over whether the circle, square or cross button should be used for forward and back on menu screens.Mark Holmes had previously done work on The Incredibles, which CounterSpy takes its visual style from. It wonderfully reflects its 1960s setting by reflecting the Space Age work of the Eames Brothers in its graphics, while also mixing James Bond and other cold war films for its soundtrack. This is the strongest point of the game; however it leads the game into being style over substance. Counter Spy is neither bad nor excellent, it's a solid average game that I had moments of fun with, but it never really grabbed me.The price you pay for it is a good benchmark for what you should expect. The gameplay, simple controls and length is designed for handhelds and mobiles. The console port may be better at showing off the graphics, but does not improve the gameplay.
I appreciate what Dynamighty have made, and will pay attention to their future releases because I think some great things are going to come out of them, if they build a game for console first.I would recommend playing Gunpoint on Steam if you are looking for a good 2D stealth game.
