Although it does provide you with the usual archetype classes to play as and many of its features feel like your typical casual RPG, what makes this game so interesting is its 3D look which contributes a lot to the change in the overall gameplay. However, let’s take things one step at a time and look at the classes available. Newcomers will get to choose between 5 classes, four of which are basically the usual Warrior, Assassin, Mage and Archer.

The last and final class, the Dancer, looks and plays a bit differently than the rest mainly because it’s a ranged DPS/Support class that can provide a certain amount of heals, be it to herself or to the team. You can create multiple characters (up to 3) per account so you can try the other classes too.

The tutorial and the story intro in this game is very different from what you may be used to as the game merges both of them into a single session, telling you the storyline verbally as you follow the tutorial’s instructions and learn how to play the game. It’s a different sort of arrangement but admittedly, I’m not very sure if this is a great idea. Anyway, after the end of the tutorial, you’ll find yourself on the usual questing treadmill in order to level up. There is a wide variety of quests in this game at least and there’s auto-pathfinding as well. The semi-action-based combat system in Era of Arcania is also one of the more interesting aspects of the game. The controls aren’t exactly very different, but the battles in this game, especially boss fights, feel a lot more visceral, intuitive and well.

Complemented with smooth and responsive controls, fights become more satisfying if you play it manually rather than simply turning on auto-combat. Due to its more interesting fights, Era of Arcania breaks the mold by allowing players to play their characters manually during PvP fights. For actual real-time fights between human-controlled characters, the PvP in this game can easily turn into an event that’s seriously engaging and competitive. This is very unlike most casual RPGs where PvP mostly boils down to CP, boosts (if there are any) and luck – a player’s skill has no part to play. There are even a ton of other things to do aside from PvPing, including raiding dungeons, hunting world bosses, decorating your own player housing, marrying your in-game partner, and even engaging in massive Guild-vs-Guild wars.

Now, similar to most MMOs, your CP rating will help you estimate your chances of success when taking on an enemy, be it an AI or another human player. As such, it is important to keep improving your CP and thankfully, there are plenty of ways you can do so, ranging from enhancing your gear to upgrading your familiar, mounts and pets.

Like most casual RPGs, guilds play a very vital role in livening up the game. Not to mention, you can also get access to special, guild-only events in addition to obtaining guild-wide perks. In return, all you need to do is to contribute your time in completing daily Guild quests, and donating gold or diamonds to fill the Guild’s coffers. Granted that Era of Arcania is simply a rebranded version of Sword and Magic, it is still a pretty incredible mobile MMO game. The 3D appearance does give the players the sort of feel and experience that a standalone PC-based MMORPG can provide, and it’s nice that the game retains some of the best elements of casual RPGs, such as a ton of freebies and auto-pathfinding.
